isl 6, the charger/discharger
• now with version 8 software
• innovative Ni-MH fullautomatic program!
- different but similar to the Ni-Cd fullautomatic program
• charges all battery types on main output Akku1
- with high currents
- with high cell counts
- discharging also possible
• easy to handle that it is possible to use without any instructions after a short time.
1) isl 6 charges/discharges following battery types on main output Akku1: 1-30 (36) cells Ni-Cd - automatic and combination programs = maintenance programs available!,
1-30 (36) cells Ni-MH - NEW: automatic and combination programs = maintenance programs available!,
1-19 (23) cells Lead-acid, lead-gel,
1-13 (16) cells Li-MnO (Tadiran batteries),
1-11 (13) cells Li-Io,
1-11 (13) cells Li-Po.
(shown in parenthesis: isl 6-636d, -636e, -636+) 2) charges from 1 cell upward 3) discharges from 2 cells Ni-Cd/Ni-MH / 1 cell others - upwards (down to a residual voltage of about 1,3 V) 4) selection of a maximum charge quantity possible (safety - cut - off). 5) upward revaluation of the battery 2 charging output (available from version 7.03).
Improved voltage resolution of version 8 software at low charge currents at the end of the charge process of lead- and lithium-batteries.
I.e. "fuller batteries because of voltage averaging". 1-6 cells Nickel-Cadmium = 1.2 ... 7.2 V,
1-6 cells Nickel-Metallhydrid = 1.2 ... 7.2 V,
1-4 cells Lead acid = 2...8 V,
1-3 cells Lithium-Mangan-Oxid (Tadiran) = 3.0 ... 9.0 V,
1-3 cells Lithium-Ion = 3.6 ... 10.8 V,
1-3 cells Lithium-Polymer = 3.6 ... 10.8 V (identical to the Li-Ion program).
To charge the maximum rated cell count on output 2 a 13.8 V supply voltage is necessary! 6) a seriell RS232-interface is available as an option (extra charge, we will mount it in our firm). From softwareversion 7.03 (or higher) isl 5 and isl 6 charger hardware is modified to make it possible to charge the above listed cell counts.
If you want to upgrade your elder isl 5 or isl 6, you have to ship the charger to Weiterstadt (Germany) to modify the hardware and software! 7) The new software remembers the charging and discharging capacity of the combination programs.
You can recall to display. 8) The new software supports the serial RS 232 port.
To read battery data on you personal computer, you need following parts which is standard in all ...RS versions of the isl 6 chargers:
i6-RS-schn: interface to install in isl 6 series charger
i6-RS-kab: connecting cable from Laptop/PC to charger
winsoft: pc-programm to receive, show and evaluate the battery data
i6-RS-einb: price to mount the interface in the charger
i6-RS-upgrade: package price of software, interface, cable, winsoft and mounting of the interface into the charger. If you want to upgrade your elder isl 5 or isl 6, you have to ship the charger to Weiterstadt (Germany) to modify the hardware and software!
Isl 6 means: intelligentes schnell ladeger?t (intelligent quick charging device) of the sixth generation.
By his functionality, the isl 6 is a pure chameleon: In one box, you get a unique, fully automatic charging and discharging device, whereby belonging to the microprocessor, accumulator maintainance - and capacity measuring programs could be integrated with a relatively high precision.
Despite his universality the use is as easy as ABC. The use is logically, and with only two (folios-) pushbuttons you have all options under control.
This is only possible with a MICROPROCESSOR inside.
Option switch output ("i6-schaltaus") - extra charge
(not for isl 6-330d; when retrofitting an old isl 6-636e only available as fan output with 12 V constant voltage, i.e. not switched)
to connect a bulb for optical "full" indication
or a fan to cool the batteries after flight.
Extract of our instructions for use:
The isl 6 has and can:
1) automatic mode (outputs akku1 and akku2)
The charger does not require any adjustments! It adapts itself automatically to any flightpack (Accu 1).
a) To use the charger, connect it to your 12 V car battery. The display shows
- p1, ready to charge in Automatic Mode (p1 = flight pack)
- p2, ready to charge 4 cells, 500 mA (p2 = Rx pack) [*]
[*] For 5-cell receiver batteries and / or 330 mA charge current please see below.
b) Plug the battery pack(s) to be charged to their appropriate sockets on the front panel.
In automatic mode isl 6 now starts to charge with 300 mA, the current afterwards rising successively to the optimal value for the connected pack(s), to descend again at the end of the fast charge cycle, which the buzzer announces by a 30 sec (appr.) beep. After automatic cut-off the equipment starts to trickle charge the packs in order to conserve the stored capacity.
2) manual modes output 1 (flight pack, pack 1)
In case you do not want to use the equipment in automatic mode, select first whether the pack is to be charged ("+") or discharged ("-"), by pushing the corresponding button several times before plugging in the battery pack.
Afterwards, again with the buttons, a desired discharge current (extending from 25 mA to 2 A and shown one by one on the liquid crystal panel - but discharge is not available at isl6- 636e) can be selected, respectively a charge current between 100 mA and the maximum current appropriate to the connected pack.
Please note, that for safety reasons the value of 8 A (isl6-636+) is only accessible in automatic mode.
3) automatic mode combination programs (output akku 1)
Between the charge and discharge "table" on the menu several additional automatic programs are installed, which allow a choice of discharge/charge cycles for formatting ("breaking-in" by three times discharge/charge) of new batteries and for reconditioning packs which have not been used for some time. These programs too can be stepped to by the "+" or "-" buttons.
Note: when discharging a receiver pack at Accu 1 output (which is normally charged at Accu 2 output) the discharge current of the automatic discharge program has the same value as the charge current used at Accu 2 output (up to the number of cells which are used at Accu 2 output)!
4) lead- and lithium battery charge and discharge (output akku 1)
See 2) - manual modes. 5) configuring power on reset and/or cutoff automatc mode (output akku 1)
Subsequent to keeping both buttons depressed WHILE HOOKING UP isl 6 to the car battery, the buttons allow (re)configuring of the device to henceforth always start with either
- the fully automatic charging program, or
- with whichever program run last,
depending on whether you select "FAUTO" or "LAST".
5.1: select one of the two modes fauto or last.
5.2: select switch mode for external 25 W indicator lamp (this menu appears even when no lamp connector is installed).
5.3: The following item displayed on the menu applies only, if the optional features "melody module" have been procured.
It is possible to chose one of 12 melodies. (Please note, that melody module is not available this time)
6) settings for output akku 2 (rx pack, pack 2)
Pushing "+" button only WHILE HOOKING UP isl 6 to the car battery produces the menu for selecting the number of cells (4 or 5) in the receiver pack.
Reply with the appropriate button, also for the charging current (+=more means: show more possible values, - = your choice). The current-settings beyond 500mA are shown in (parenthesis). These current values are not available for Accu 2 output but for Accu 1 output (see below). The charger will charge with its maximum current of 500mA.
The settings of 4) and 5) are automatically saved and kept in nonvolatile memory.
7) Verification of actual mode and of applied charge
Symbols used:
"*" indicates, that the device is at its power limits and has reduced the charging current accordingly, whereas the pack would
be capable of absorbing more current than isl 6 can furnish.
"!" signals, that at this moment the microprocessor is monitoring the pack to determine and possibly adjust the charging current
to a new optimum value.
"a", "b", ... appear in this sequence after a voltage peak has been detected and indicate in ascending probability, that the battery
is full.
"f", "e", ... appear as an inverse letter to show, that the battery is full or empty.
"t" indicates that the rapid charge cycle is terminated (full) and trickle charging has begun.
a) Actual charge/discharge mode:
Pushing ONE button ONCE displays the actual mode of operation. The indicated values may differ from the original setting as a result of the automatic adaptation of the device to the condition of the pack being treated.
b) Capacity state:
Simultaneously pushing and HOLDING BOTH buttons displays the charge applied to the pack(s) up to that moment. This verification remains possible even after the pack(s) has/have been disconneced.
8) error mode
Besides an automatic reset provoked by a condition unknown to the software and produced by unforeseen outside interventions or errors and warnings, the charger can be reset on purpose by removing one of the charging cable's clamps at the car battery.
9) technical data:
All Data given is based on a 12.5V car battery voltage.
